weeknotes for w/c 16/06/25
what happened on the week beginning 16th june 2025?
it's too damn hot. that is all.
miscellanea
- Started Radical Tactics of the Offline Library, by Henry Warwick. I personally don't agree with how black-and-white Warwick's views are on peer-to-peer sharing versus centralised file sharing services he calls "data lockers".
- for example, I don't think all data locker systems are extensions of neoliberal and capitalist systems because they're centralised. in my view, it depends heavily on the focus and the intended purposes of the system (permanent and durable archival preservation is difficult in a peer-to-peer system, because of its very nature).
- it's licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported, so I could produce an annotated version of it. I think I'll write up my thoughts about it soon, but I'm afraid of looking a little silly.
- read Valuable Humans in Transit and Other Short Stories. most of the stories were decent, but it wasn't the best writing and somewhat painful at times.
musings
- iPhone got too hot to use three times this week. this sweltering weather is getting ridiculous, although it's due to cool down next week
- I need to watch Total Recall. I saw an enforcer costume in the BFI Southwark building lading, and it looked really cool
- Turn My Heart to Stone by MØ is a really good song
misadventures
- over the course of this week, worked on refactoring a bunch of database code and writing new unit tests this week.
- refactoring code is such a slog. some random Java library that's critical to the function of the entire codebase is causing segmentation faults, and debugging it has been a challenge. I'm ready to give up
- finally mustered the energy to do a food shop, hoping to get it delivered on Tuesday evening. Bruno's coming next Friday, so I need food for him to eat.
- I'm excited to see him, and I’m planning to drag him to karaoke and a bunch of museums and exhibitions, as well as the theatre. he's going to be sick of me by the end of his visit.
- got a mysterious package containing an e-reader delivered from one of my adoring fans on Monday. (it's an early birthday gift). got a case delivered on Wednesday, too!
- bought a bunch of e-books on my reading list and started catching up on a few over the course of this week
- cooked egg fried rice for dinner on Monday night
- started writing a non-weeknotes blog post on Tuesday. this one will have diagrams! it's about my creative process, and how I manage my backlog
- went to a codebar Queer Show and Tell event on Wednesday, at Founders and Coders in SPACE4. it was lovely to see so many people show up. I did enjoy it, which I don't think I expected
- I spend my whole life speaking and presenting and sharing, so it's nice to be able to meet other people who have that same passion and who are just as nerdy. it's maybe happening again next month, and I'm excited for it
- saw a bloke with the exact same shoes as me on the tube back home
- went to a BFI NETWORK preview event on Wednesday, where they screened four excellent short films funded by the programme.
- in order from my most to least favourite...
- Rapture was a comedy that explored sexuality and religious guilt
- Softy explored themes of growing up Black in the north of England
- In Heat documented a gay recovering sex addict's slow. and painful relapse and descent into psychosis
- Out of the Peat was a horror-adjacent film exploring the directors' loves of Old English folklore and 35mm film
- had a Q&A with the films' directors and producers after the screening. other people's creative processes are fascinating.
- met Jacob at Brewdog afterwards, had two pints
- in order from my most to least favourite...
- went to dinner on Friday night, for the DX Roundtable. only two other people showed up, but we had a really productive discussion. excited to get all of it transcribed, so we can work on it more
- spent Saturday in London for a friend's birthday. it was great to see everyone again
- went to IKEA and moseyed around aimlessly, had lunch there. the hot dogs are great
- went to Mudchute Farm where we saw some of the animals, followed by Phantom Peak. I enjoyed it more than I expected, and managed to complete two quests! walked 20,000 steps, too!
- lazed about on Sunday
- had breakfast at the top of the road.
- swept and cleaned up my house, and watered the plants
- started writing my set for the 26th, I think a good set is coming together. (for those of you out of the loop, I'm trying my hand at stand-up comedy at The Rose and Crown in Kentish Town, and you should absolutely come to watch me embarrass myself in a room full of strangers for five minutes!)
- downloaded the iOS 26 Beta on Sunday night out of curiosity. considering downgrading because it is ugly and slow
- reviewed some submissions for the OpenInfra CI/CD track over the course of this week and booked my ticket for the Summit. really strong submissions this year, and I'm excited to see them in person
