weeknotes for w/c 14/10/24
what happened on the week beginning 14th october 2024?
i didn't think i'd have much to speak about this week (then again, i think that every week), but i found out that i did quite a bit. this update comes a little late (on a Monday) following an incredibly busy Sunday.
i yearn to sleep, but before that... last week's update!
- on Sunday evening, i ordered in a sweaty kebab (yes, that's an expression from... somewhere) for handling that homelab incident so damn well
- Plane has been incredible for me
- managed to knock out a few personal tasks using it as my task managers, it's been super, super useful to see things outlined visually
- Plane's PWA works surprisingly well on iOS. it's nowhere near as good as a native app, especially in terms of offline capability, but it lets me manage my tasks from home. they have released a mobile app, but it's only for hosted plans at the moment
- moved one of my domains over to iCloud Mail's custom domains feature, works a treat
- i've come to the conclusion i do need to make an active effort to treat my body a little better
- my order for RAM from Crucial got returned to sender because Royal Mail routed it all the way to my local delivery office, but somehow couldn't identify the address for the last mile of delivery? i ordered more from Amazon, and got it delivered on Friday. i need to set aside some time to build it soon!
- i got Housing Complex C as a suggestion on Channel 4's streaming service. it looks interesting, and i should definitely get around to watching it at some point.
- rewatched The Cleaner after reading about it on Terence Eden's blog
- work was busy this week, although i'm excited for next week. i'm running an experiment to examine the guarantees our team can make around cache consistency
- i got a response to an enquiry i sent to the London Transport Museum about their rideable model railway at Acton Town Museum Depot. i actually need to sit down and respond to it at some point this week
- i've been test-running a Mastodon instance over the past few weeks, which has been incredibly flaky and 504s often. i need to investigate why, but it being proxied through Cloudflare Tunnels does not make my job any easier
- spoke to a friend about their homelab setup, and i've got a good few ideas about mine (especially around self-hosted DNS!)
- i'm making an active effort to be a more positive person and speak to people more nicely. it feels good being positive
- woke up with an absolutely horrid headache on the left side of my face on Saturday. managed to take some painkillers and stumble out of bed
- got my flu jab on Saturday, too! it's good to stay protected
- went to a lovely birthday/Halloween party in Eastleigh on Saturday afternoon. i got called "the cocktail man", because i mixed lots of lovely cocktails (including a chocolate martini and a Baileys hot chocolate) for everyone. i should really keep a recipe book of cocktails i make
- swung by Newspeak House on Sunday to meet some of this year's incoming cohort, who are four weeks in. they're an incredibly bright bunch, and it's awesome to hear how enthusiastic they are and what they're working on
