weeknotes for w/c 07/10/24
what happened on the week beginning 07th october 2024?
a late update on the first full week of october. i had my first proper, big-boy homelab outage! services were affected for ~24 hours, and there was even some data loss 🫨
- my PC parts have been trickling in slowly over the past week. i'm excited to get building! 💻
- it looks like the RAM is stuck somewhere in a Royal Mail sorting centre. i'll have to chase them next week.
- i bought one too many drives for my media server. i'll probably test them all, zero them all out, and then just use the spare as a backup when one inevitably goes bust
- 24Tb of usable storage is still incredibly impressive
- had another productive therapy session on Tuesday, i'm excited for the next one. 🙏
- went to Black Tech Fest on Thursday. it wasn't the best conference, but i managed to meet a bunch of interesting people!
- secured tickets for uncodebar barcelona in November. I'm excited!
- i wrote my first "proper" blog post about moving uptime kuma off my homelab, finally providing a degree of durability to my uptime monitoring! 🎈
- listened to some Billie Eilish while crushing through my blog post. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is a surprisingly good album, although not necessarily part of the no skipper society
- got around to cleaning my desk! 💁
- was my first full week of using plane as task management software. it's really good for visualising what i need to do. i installed it as pwa on my phone 📱
- on Sunday, i went to Meet the Jette Parker Artists: Jukebox at the Linbury Theatre with a few friends. everyone in attendance got to learn a little more about the various singers on the Jette Parker Artists Programme, and hear a snippet of songs of their choice
- Linbury Theatre is a very small and intimate space below the main Royal Opera House, it was my first time there and i quite liked it!
- Jingwen Cai stood out as an amazing mezzo-soprano, i was blown away
- apparently the songs we selected would be performed at the evening concert! i didn't get tickets, but one of my friends managed to!
- we went to the Transport Museum cafe right next to the Royal Opera House after, and had tea
- had a major homelab outage which started on Sunday night and continued until monday, due to a bad update update to coolify. i do, in fact, need to start updating things. i've considered backblaze, so maybe this is the time to try it out? regardless, i'm glad i moved uptime kuma when i did! 🔭
- learnt a bunch of lessons, especially to not depend on beta software for anything mission critical, to make backups and to never panick when trying to remediate!
- my initial panick made this much, much worse than it had to be. i accidentally wiped a database that contained all my service configurations by dumping it with the wrong username 🤦♂️
