weeknotes for w/c 03/02/25

what happened on the week beginning 03rd february 2025?

this week has been an absolute whirlwind! I've mostly spent this week recovering from FOSDEM and taking it easy, and I've managed to secure a new job I'm starting next Wednesday. 🎉

this update will be relatively short, as I've been shattered from FOSDEM and haven't had the time to take many notes. we should be back to the more regular, consistent, high-quality updates you expect next week

  • after flying back on Monday evening, I laid in bed on Tuesday and recovered from FOSDEM. it was one hell of an experience.
    • I had a really good time at FOSDEM, and I’m excited to keep that momentum going. I’ve got a handful of community meets I’m going to over the next few weeks, and then I have a conference talk at codebar Festival.
    • excited to get a blog post out about this
    • conferences beget conferences. I'm hoping to go to Newline, 39C3, BSides London and WHY this year.
  • purchased WHY tickets on impulse. that's never gone wrong before 😄
  • I organised a codebar workshop for West London on Tuesday evening, it was good! I forgot how much I missed it
  • went to Meltdown video game bar to meet friends on Thursday. it’s a nice spot King's Cross that's really cozy
  • a Coolify auto-update knocked out some of my containers, and renewed my worry about a lack of a coherent home-lab backup strategy. if anyone has any advice, I'd be eternally grateful
  • I've been made a job offer! there'll hopefully be more information in the coming weeks, as I share more about where I'm working, who I'm working with and what my role entails.
    • right now, I can say that I'm excited to shape software engineering practices at an exciting start-up, as well as to inform their open-source strategy
    • I can also say I'm very excited to start work again. I'm damn good at engineering software and I'm happy I can flex that part of my brain again more consistently
  • I need to take some time to fix my flaky self-hosted Mastodon instance. the only thing it seems to be consistently good at is 500-ing
  • spent some time watching Series 1 of Industry this week. it's a weirdly overstimulating show but it's so damn good
  • went to a movie night on Saturday, which focusses on bad films. managed to watch Velocipastor (which has one of the most hilariously kitsch sex scenes in cinema), Dante's Peak and Rock & Rule. all were hilariously bad, and I loved them. it was good to spend time with friends
